The highly regarded edublogger Will Richardson suggests that educators must change three fundamental pieces of instruction to meet the needs of the 21st century learner and adjust to new educational technologies. In "Three Things to Unlearn About Learning" Will proposes that educators need to rethink 1) instruction, 2) competition amongst students and schools and 3) assessment. This is an interesting proposal and while easy to follow him on his last two points, his ideas on changing the delivery of instruction and handing over more responsibility to the students to drive their own curriculum structure made me take pause. As more and more teachers are evaluated and compensated based on student performance on standardized tests, I wonder just how willing teachers would be to hand over this responsibility to their students.
